Why Soundgarden Fans Won’t Hear Chris Cornell’s Last Recordings is Explained by Matt Cameron

Vicky and the band members had previously argued about who owned a number of unpublished tracks that had been recorded prior to Chris Cornell’s passing in 2017. The disagreement dragged on for years before turning into a court case. But in an April statement, Vicky Cornell and Soundgarden both expressed gratitude for the amicable resolution they had reached, stressing that it would allow fans to hear the last songs Chris and the band collaborated on. But based on what Matt Cameron just told us, it doesn’t seem like it will be that simple. In an interview with The Vinyl Guide Interview Podcast, Cameron provided an update on the state of affairs. In response to the question of when the last recordings with Chris Cornell will be made available. He declared: Regretfully, I don’t believe so. We continue to be embroiled in a sort of conflict with the estate and I believe that everything is currently on pause, and I regret that I am unable to provide more specifics at this time. However, as of right now, it doesn’t appear that it will occur in the upcoming year.

I refuse to give up hope. It’s possible that Cameron and Chris had a better musical collaboration than we realized. In August 2022, former Soundgarden drummer Matt Cameron made an appearance on Rick Beato’s YouTube channel and said that he trusted his musical instincts that Chris Cornell did not critique his drumming. Cameron extended his views by pointing out that the late Chris Cornell did not respond to his drumming: It was astounding that he remained silent. We both truly appreciated what the other brought to the table, therefore I believe it contributed to it in part. However, it seems like he was just fond of my work. As a fellow musician, songwriter, bandmate, and human being, he trusted my gut. No, no, that never really happened, but on the other hand, on the other hand, in some of his demos, he was playing drums, or there was some programming that I had to exactly follow because the parts were so damn good. For me, the most important thing is to make sure the portion works as well as possible with the song.
